Numeric is a South African nonprofit company interested in using technology to create exciting and stimulating learning environments.  Numeric's mission is to help young South Africans excel at maths.  In order to do this, we use a powerful online learning platform called Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org).  

In collaboration with the University of Johannesburg, Numeric is running a 10 week arithmetic and pre-algebra course using the Khan Academy online learning platform.

Numeric seeks to appoint a Maths Course Convenor - Khan Academy, based at the University of Johannesburg, Soweto Campus, for two days a week for the duration of the course, and will work with our Johannesburg team to provide an exciting and high impact learning experience for the 120 Bachelor of Education students who will attend the course

This is a three-month, part-time position running from July through September 2014. Numeric is looking for someone who is passionate about maths and the use of technology (e.g. Khan Academy) in maths education to oversee this course.

Starting date: 7 July  – 3 October (12 weeks).

Responsibilities:

  • Familiarising him/herself with the Khan Academy platform (one week training provided by Numeric – 7-11 July);
  • Assisting Numeric with the training of two part-time coaches/tutors for the course;
  • Creating Khan Academy accounts for all students and sectioning into four classes;
  • Maintaining attendance registers, drill results and test results in google spreadsheets;
  • Attending weekly Khan Academy sessions and supporting coaches in their roles;
  • Overseeing the administration and grading of a 75 minute baseline test in July;
  • Overseeing the administration and grading of a 75 minute endline test in September;
  • Managing the course schedule, computer lab bookings, and logistics for the course;
  • Any other activities required for the smooth running of this course.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent;
  • Higher grade maths through to matric;
  • Teaching or tutoring experience;
  • Involvement in outreach projects;
  • Leadership in extra-curricular projects;
  • Competencies and qualities;
  • Comfortable with numbers and quantitative topics;
  • Interest in and ability to handle new and changing technologies;
  • Passion for education.
